IRBIL, Iraq (AP) -- Two suicide bombers struck the offices of two U.S.-backed Kurdish parties in near-simultaneous attacks Sunday as hundreds of Iraqis gathered to celebrate a Muslim holiday. At least 56 people were killed and more than 235 were wounded, officials said.
One Kurdish minister said the death toll could exceed 100. The U.S. command in Baghdad put the casualty toll at 56 dead and more than 200 were injured. Kurdish officials said 57 were dead and the count could go higher.
This is probably the worst news to come out of Iraq in months. If Ansar al-Islam is really thinking they could start an offensive against the Kurds with a suicide decapitation strike, then this is a major escalation of a problem that, according to the White House Iraqi Spin Machine , was supposed to be under control and on the way to a stable transition of power.
But let's take it a step further, because if we are serious about helping the Kurds, then it becomes incumben upon us to deal with Ansar... but as we all remember that road leads to Tehran, not back to a shadowy Osama/Bagdad Axis-of-Crankiness
hmmmm... Iran, huh?
